Five things every Windows user MUST do

Inspired by a Washington Post article called "Microsoft Windows: Insecure by design"

It was one thing for geeks and nerds to blast Windows and make pitched arguments for Linux desktops, but it's an altogether much more damning thing to have The Washington Post come out and declare Windows "insecure by design" (see the Sunday, Aug. 24th edition at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A34978-2003Aug23.html).

The Post's technology writer, Rob Pegararo, says that "In its default setup, Windows XP on the Internet amounts to a car parked in a bad part of town, with the doors unlocked, the key in the ignition and a Post-It note on the dashboard saying, 'Please don't steal this.'"

Whoa! Them's fightin' words.

(As a side note, I should mention that nerds and geeks have been debating the downfall of the Internet due to Microsoft's security tactics for years. Take a look at security researcher Steve Gibson's take on things if you want to get really scared. We should note that some of Gibson's predictions have not come true, but we're still listening to him ... )

Anyhow, Pegararo's article reminded us of five things every Windows user MUST do in order to safeguard a computer:

And if you don't understand what we just talked about here, then contact the experts at BridgWorks today!

Hit by MSBlast?

If your computer was hit by the MSBlast (aka LovSan) worm, then you need to take steps to fix it right away, before it infects any more computers or another worm comes along that uses the same exploit, and deletes your files or steals information from you (like your clients’ emails or credit card numbers). This is a very dangerous exploit … you don’t have to open any email or visit any websites … it comes looking for unprotected computers, just like yours!

If you're still reading this, you're computer is probably infected and you need help. We could list a bunch of websites with disinfection and technical information about the worm, but it'd probably be easier to contact us right away, so we can schedule a service call for you.

About this web page

We've been building websites since before anyone knew what "www" meant, way back in 1994. So we've seen the many changes that web browsers have undergone, and one of the most important changes has been the push for strict standards. Our websites are 100 percent compliant witrh XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS 2.

So what the heck does that mean?

It means that our sites are designed to render the same no matter what web browser you use, and still look good. In addition, since we're designing using the very latest in specifications, our websites will continue to look good, as more and more people and web browsers adhere to strict standards.

The design for this website was modified from a design by haran, which he posted on the Open Source Web Design site, which is a community of designers and site owners freely sharing designs as well as design information. If you'd like to know more about this design, check out the Sinorca template at the OSWD website.
